The Short Version

A surgeon is not only a surgeon

Mr Mohamed Mohyudin graduated from the University of Leeds in2009, took fellowships in two of ophthalmology’s most exacting subspecialties, and has been a substantive consultant at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust since2020. He has performed more than5,000+ cataract operations and over500+ squint corrections, and he teaches the surgeons coming up behind him as College Tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

That is the version that appears on a referral letter. It is accurate, and it explains almost nothing about him.

The rest of it involves a golf course at first light, an unreasonable number of films watched with a surgeon’s attention to composition, a seat at premieres he still finds faintly absurd, and several weeks a year spent restoring sight in places where the operation is otherwise unavailable. Why the famous go quiet about their surgeon

Oculoplastic surgery sits on the border between the functional and the aesthetic. The eyelid occupies two square centimetres of a face and carries an outsized share of how that face is read.

Get eyelid surgery slightly wrong and the result is not a poor scar; it is a different person. Which is why the same habits that govern a good operating list — plan everything in advance, decide nothing under pressure, stop earlier than you think you should — turn out to be the habits that make a surgeon worth recommending quietly.

Across more than 5,000+ cataract operations,500+ squint corrections and thousands of eyelid procedures, that meticulousness has become the thing colleagues mention first.

It is also what draws a particular kind of patient. His combination of precision and aesthetic sensibility has made him a considered choice among high-profile individuals — including a notable number of fashion models, for whom facial symmetry is not vanity but livelihood, and for whom a millimetre of asymmetry is an occupational problem rather than a cosmetic one.

Discretion is the other half of the offer, and it is not negotiable: no photographs, no named testimonials, no confirmation that a given person was ever seen at all. It is the reason the list looks as it does, and the reason none of it can be described here.

The habits that make a surgeon good at surgery rarely switch off at the theatre door. His are simply pursued elsewhere.

Golf

He plays regularly and seriously, and is open about why the game holds him. Golf demands the three qualities that also govern a good operating list: sustained focus, patience with a process that cannot be rushed, and a tolerance for the fact that precision is the only thing that counts. A shot is either struck correctly or it is not, and the course is entirely indifferent to intention.

It is, he says, the closest thing he has found to the theatre outside it — a few hours in which nothing exists beyond the next deliberate movement.

Cinema & Culture

A lifelong student of visual storytelling, he is drawn to cinema for reasons that are recognisably professional: how a frame is composed, where the eye is directed, what a director leaves just outside the light. A surgeon spends a career learning to read a visual field; the interest is less a departure than a continuation.

His standing means his name appears with some regularity on the guest list for exclusive red-carpet premieres — evenings he enjoys chiefly for the work being shown. Humanitarian Work

Sight, restored where it is least affordable

Cataract remains the largest single cause of avoidable blindness in the world, and the operation that reverses it takes under half an hour. In much of the world it is simply unavailable — not because it is difficult, but because there is no surgeon within reach and no realistic way to pay for one.

Mr Mohyudin serves as an advisor to World Aid Network, a UK Charitable Incorporated Organisation funding sight-restoring eye surgery, cancer treatment and emergency disaster relief acrossPakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. The charity works through locally licensed clinicians and accredited partner hospitals rather than running clinics of its own — an approach he regards as the only one that leaves anything behind.
